Ohiopyle

The Youghiogheny river is probably one of the most popular whitewater kayaking spots in this area.

The "middle Yough", between Confluence and Ohiopyle is mild rapids and is an excellent place for new paddlers to "cut their teeth." The "Ramcat" rapid in particular, is a popular place for beginners to practice.

A number of years ago, I ran this stretch of river in a canoe. It was a blast and I recommend the trip to almost anyone.

The "lower Yough" starts right below the waterfall in Ohiopyle. It's mostly class III and IV. A popular trip is called "The Loop", which entails paddling the first six rapids around Ferncliff peninsula, then hiking back to the launch point across the "neck" of the peninsula. This avoids the need to have a vehicle parked downstream for portage purposes.

In addition to the Kayaking, the fantastic bike trail called The Great Allegheny Passage follows the Youghiogheny river. If you enjoy "rails-to-trails" style riding, this trail is one you'll like.

The Yough is cold. Bring warm clothing -- my understanding is that the water is cold year-round.

One of the more enjoyable parts about trips to the Yough (for me) is that the local communities are all about paddling and biking. You find a lot of like-minded people in this area, so it's fun to visit.
